Boy Meets Bot

This was a stop-motion project for my animation class. Of all my animations, this is probably the one I remember most fondly, probably because it was such a wild ride to make.

The figures are made out of plasticine, not clay, so I didn’t have to run the risk of them drying out over the very long process of animating this. Unfortunately, the material got very soft under the makeshift spotlight that I used, so they kept falling apart at the end. That stuff is heavier than it looks! The solution was a simple one: Replace the soft parts with fresh plasticine!

Th biggest hurdle that I encountered along the way was that I didn’t own a camera at the time! After several hours of taping my phone to various items and watching it flop off, I finally found the solution, which was to build a wooden rig to hold an iPad, then use a second iPad as a remote with some 3rd party software.
